Beginner chess lessons for children
Starting from nothing is the easiest place to start. Beginners get the rules taught properly the first time, which avoids the habits that take months to unpick later, grabbing free pawns, moving the queen out on move two, and never looking at what the opponent just did.

The order matters. We teach checkmate before openings, because a child who can finish a game has a reason to play one.
- Board setup, piece movement, capture and check.
- Basic checkmates: king and queen, king and rook.
- Piece value and safe trading.
- Opening principles, centre, development, king safety.
- Spotting one-move threats before replying.
No prior knowledge assumed, from anyone
Parents do not need to play. Everything a child needs to practise is set in a form you can supervise without knowing chess yourself.
How long the beginner stage takes
Typically two to four months at one class a week, depending on age and practice. The coach tells you when the child is ready for the next stage and why, rather than moving them on a schedule.
Common questions
- My child learned on an app. Are they still a beginner?
- Often, yes, app play teaches the rules and little else. The free demo includes an assessment so we place them accurately instead of guessing.
- Are beginner lessons 1:1 or group?
- Both work. Very young beginners usually do better 1:1; children of 8 and above often enjoy a small level-matched group.
