Small group chess classes

Group classes work when the group is genuinely level-matched. Ours are small and grouped by stage, so nobody spends the hour bored and nobody spends it lost. Children also learn from hearing another child reason out loud, including when that reasoning is wrong.

How groups are formed

Children are grouped by curriculum stage and, where possible, by age band. A child moves group when they finish a stage, not when a term ends.

  • 60-minute live class with a coach, never a recording.
  • Small enough that every child answers questions each class.
  • Weekly puzzle set shared with the whole group.
  • Friendly internal tournaments between stages.

The social part matters

Chess can be a solitary hobby. A group gives a child people to compare notes with, a reason to prepare, and a low-pressure place to lose a game and carry on.

Cost

Group classes cost less per class than 1:1 and are the more sustainable option for a long-term weekly habit. Local prices are shown on the pricing page.

Common questions

How small is a small group?
Small enough that each child is asked to explain their thinking every class. If a group grows past that point we split it.
What if my child falls behind the group?
The coach will tell you before it becomes a problem and will suggest either a short 1:1 block or a move to a group at the right stage.
