What chess level is my child?

Answer eight practical questions to estimate a sensible starting stage. Nothing is saved, and you do not need to enter an email address or phone number.

This is a starting-point guide, not a rating test. Choose “Not sure” when you have not seen the skill yourself. A live assessment can confirm the course and reveal uneven gaps.
  1. 1.Can your child set up the board and explain how every piece moves?
  2. 2.Can they complete a legal game and recognise check, checkmate and stalemate?
  3. 3.Can they reliably checkmate with a king and queen against a lone king?
  4. 4.Do they spot simple forks, pins and one-move threats in puzzles?
  5. 5.Before moving, do they usually check what their opponent's last move threatens?
  6. 6.Can they explain a basic opening plan instead of only recalling moves?
  7. 7.Can they use a chess clock and stay calm through a slower game?
  8. 8.Have they played a school, club or rated tournament and reviewed their games afterwards?

How to interpret the result

Children rarely develop every chess skill at the same speed. A player can solve tactical puzzles well and still struggle to finish an endgame, or know openings while overlooking an opponent's threat. That is why Knightly uses the result as a conversation starter and checks real positions during the free demo.

If you already have recent games, bring them to the assessment. They show more than an online rating alone because the coach can see how your child uses time, responds to threats and chooses a plan.
