UK tournament coaching
Tournament preparation should make a child more reliable at the board, not bury them in opening theory. For UK juniors, the most useful work is often practical: using the clock, checking the opponent's threat, recording moves when required, recovering after a bad round and reviewing the games that actually happened.
This format is useful when a child already plays complete games and has an upcoming school event, junior congress or rated competition. It is also useful after an event, because several tournament games in one day reveal patterns that casual online games can hide.
A child does not need to be highly rated. The preparation should match the event and current level rather than introducing advanced material just because the word 'tournament' is involved.
If the child repeatedly loses pieces in one move, that is the first tournament problem to solve. If the games are sound until the final ten minutes, time management deserves attention. If positions are good but simple endings are lost, the training should move there.
Recent games tell the coach which error is costing the most points. That becomes more useful than adding a fashionable opening that may never appear in the event.
When there is roughly a month before an event, one sensible structure is to spend the first week auditing recent games, the next two weeks fixing the biggest recurring issues and the final week playing event-like practice games with the expected time control.
This is an example rather than a fixed programme. A child entering their first rapid event needs different preparation from an experienced player entering a long standardplay congress.
Junior events can differ in time control, rating status, notation requirements, age sections and membership requirements. Coaching can prepare the chess and tournament habits, but parents should read the organiser's event-specific regulations before the day.
