UK private coaching

Private chess coaching for children in the UK

Private coaching is most useful when the lesson needs to follow one child's actual games, pace and goals rather than a general class plan. Knightly's UK 1:1 lessons are live, 45 minutes long and scheduled in UK local time, with the first session used to assess level and coach fit before a family commits.

When 1:1 chess coaching is worth paying for

A private lesson earns its extra cost when the problem is individual. That might be a child who understands tactics but repeatedly loses endgames, a school-club player who moves too quickly, or a tournament player whose recent games reveal one recurring weakness.

For a complete beginner, private coaching can also help if the child is very young, shy in groups or needs the coach to move more slowly. It is not automatically necessary for every beginner; a well-matched small group can be excellent for children who enjoy learning with peers.

  • The coach can spend most of the lesson on your child's own games.
  • The pace changes immediately when a concept is already understood or needs more time.
  • Tournament preparation can focus on the child's real openings, time use and recent mistakes.
  • Parents can get specific feedback rather than a general class summary.

What a useful private lesson should look like

A strong 1:1 lesson should involve the child explaining decisions, not simply watching a coach demonstrate good moves. The coach needs to hear the thinking process in order to diagnose why a mistake happened.

At Knightly, a lesson may combine a short review of recent games, one focused teaching idea, guided positions where the child has to choose a move, and a small practice task for the week. The mix changes with age and level rather than following the same script for every student.

Do you need a titled player to teach a child?

A chess title can be relevant when a strong competitive player needs advanced preparation, but title alone does not tell you whether someone can teach a seven-year-old clearly. For younger and developing players, communication, diagnosis and the ability to build habits often matter more than paying for the strongest possible player.

Ask what the coach noticed in the demo, what they would work on first and why. Those answers are more informative than a profile that only lists ratings and tournament achievements.

UK scheduling without converting the lesson in your head

UK families should not need to calculate an overseas coach's time zone every week. Knightly schedules UK lessons in local GMT or BST, with after-school and weekend windows. When the UK clocks change, the aim is to keep the child's local lesson time stable and adjust on the coaching side.

The current UK market page publishes the available weekday and weekend windows and the current GBP price per lesson.

How the free demo is used

The demo is not a shortened sales call. The coach works with the child, checks how they approach several positions and gives a recommended starting stage. Parents can judge the teaching style while the coach judges placement.

If the first coach match is not right, the useful response is to change the match rather than ask a child to adapt to a teaching style that is not working.

Common parent questions

How long is a private Knightly chess lesson?

UK personal coaching is a live 45-minute 1:1 lesson with one coach and one child.

Can a parent sit in on the lesson?

Yes. Parents are welcome to observe. Scheduling and progress communication is handled with the parent rather than asking the child to manage personal contact details.

My child already plays at school. Will you start from the beginning?

No. The demo is used to identify what the child already understands and where the actual gaps are, then the coach recommends a starting stage.

Can private coaching be used before a tournament?

Yes. 1:1 lessons are particularly useful for reviewing the child's own games, time management and a practical tournament routine without promising a particular rating or result.
